Countering Mpox Vaccination Disparities in Los Angeles County, California, May-December 2022
Am J Public Health. 2023 Sep 21:e1-e5. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2023.307409. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProviding equitable access to vaccines for individuals at risk for mpox was critical for containing the 2022 mpox outbreak in Los Angeles County, California. Eligible non-Hispanic Black/African American and Latinx individuals had lower vaccine uptake than did non-Hispanic White individuals, despite having higher mpox case rates. Strategies to address disparities in vaccine uptake included using familiar messaging technology to reach individuals at risk for mpox, using partnerships with community-based organizations to raise ...

Results of the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology Survey on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Toxicologic Pathology
Toxicol Pathol. 2023 Jun;51(4):216-224. doi: 10.1177/01926233231182115.ABSTRACTThe European Society of Toxicologic Pathology (ESTP) initiated a survey through its Pathology 2.0 workstream in partnership with sister professional societies in Europe and North America to generate a snapshot of artificial intelligence (AI) usage in the field of toxicologic pathology. In addition to demographic information, some general questions explored AI relative to (1) the current status of adoption across organizations; (2) technical and methodological aspects; (3) perceived business value and finally; and (4) roadblocks and perspectives....

A New Strategy for Rejuvenating Primary Healthcare: The Government-Society Partnership Model
J Prim Care Community Health. 2023 Jan-Dec;14:21501319231200763. doi: 10.1177/21501319231200763.ABSTRACTPrimary healthcare systems worldwide are under stress as increased demands during pandemic surges have exposed deficiencies in the system. Primary healthcare centers have significant responsibilities but are often underfunded and understaffed. Recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted the importance of a strong primary health center network to promote community health and save lives. Most governments have multiple competing financial needs for scarce resources, ultimately limiting the advancement o...

In vitro oxygen imaging of acellular and cell-loaded beta cell replacement devices
This article aims to establish the protocols and demonstrate a few examples of in vitro oxygen imaging of BAP devices using EPROI. All pO2 measurements were performed using a recently introduced 720 MHz/25 mT preclinical oxygen imager instrument, JIVA-25™. We began by performing pO2 calibration of the biomaterials used in BAPs at 25 mT magnetic field since no such data exist. We compared the EPROI pO2 measurement with a single-point probe for a few selected materials. We also performed trityl OX071 toxicity studies with fibroblasts, as well as insulin-producing cells (beta TC6, MIN6, and human islet cells). Finally, we p...

New insight into the traditional model of the coagulation cascade and its regulation: illustrated review of a three-dimensional view
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2023 Aug 7;7(6):102160. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2023.102160. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe coagulation process relies on an intricate network of three-dimensional structural interactions and subtle biological regulations. In the present review, we illustrate the state of the art of the structural biology of the coagulation cascade by surveying the Protein Data Bank and the EBI AlphaFold databases. Investigations performed in the last decade have provided structural information on essentially all players involved in the process. Indeed, the initial characterization of specific and rather canonical d...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 1793: The Conserved Chromatin Remodeler SMARCAD1 Interacts with TFIIIC and Architectural Proteins in Human and Mouse
Mermoud In vertebrates, SMARCAD1 participates in transcriptional regulation, heterochromatin maintenance, DNA repair, and replication. The molecular basis underlying its involvement in these processes is not well understood. We identified the RNA polymerase III general transcription factor TFIIIC as an interaction partner of native SMARCAD1 in mouse and human models using endogenous co-immunoprecipitations. TFIIIC has dual functionality, acting as a general transcription factor and as a genome organizer separating chromatin domains. We found that its partnership with SMARCAD1 is conserved across different mammalian cel...
